Sakeen Wright is fresh off of being
named South Jersey's football Player of the Year in 2000. The powerful
senior quarterbacked the Glassboro football team to the South Jersey
Group 1 final versus Paulsboro, and now has his sights set on leading
the basketball team back to hoop heights. Wright averaged 19.6 ppg last
season for the 22-6 Bulldogs before falling to Florence in the Group
1 finals and has shown an overall marked improvement.
"The first thing you notice about
Sakeen is that he has tremendous athletic ability", said coach
Russ Winsett, Jr. "The best thing is that he has grown into becoming
a true team leader. He's been with the program for 4 years now and his
maturity shows."
Glassboro also trots out senior Kevin
Evans. The 5-11 point guard is the floor leader knows how to distribute
the ball and get others involved.
"Kevin's turnovers are down from
last season, and strategy-wise, he's solid. We're a better team with
Kevin on the court," said Winsett, Jr.
The fun doesn't stop there. Terrence
Holmes is a 6-3 junior who Coach Winsett says is the hardest worker
on the team. He averaged 15.9 ppg for the Glassboro last season, and
helps the Bulldogs form a great nucleus.
Despite returning veteran leadership
and dependable impact players, Coach Winsett is quick to keep his squad
firmly planted on the ground.
"I've told the team that we're
not just going to reappear in the finals. We're going to take this season
one practice at a time and one game at a time. We're not going to overlook
anyone. The team knows they're good and that they can do big things
this year, but they also know they've got to continue to work hard."
Can Glassboro make it back to the Group
1 final
and beyond? For now, they're the team to beat. And they
know it.
